Amy, I would love to help you with some canning. Almost anything you can imagine can be canned! To start off, I would recommend high acidic food, like spaghetti sauce.

i would love to can different things and have them. I don't have a place for a garden. I was wondering if anyone can tell me a book or someplace to find how to can different things. Also so anyone ever swap canned items? If so please let me know. I use to help my grandma and step mom in Ky but my grandma has passed away and now that i am older i don't ever to enjoy the canned stuff.

My Mom says that my name is a mix of my grandma's names, but I don't believe her. Their names were Alice Elizabeth & Emily Virginia. No capital "R" anywhere! They should've named me Heidi like they first wanted to. We're Swiss/German & it would've fit better. My name sounds French or something & I don't have French in me. :-) I'll look up "Pollyanna Pickering" & check out her artwork! Thanks.

Im really wanting to get into canning. My husband makes the best hot sauce, and usually we just put it into jars that we have around the house (old hot sauce jars, and pickle jars) then put in the fridge. So with spaghetti sauce you just take it right off the stove and put it in one of those jars, then on the shelf it goes? Is it the same with hot sauce too?

Jessica, all you will need to do is peel and core your apples, cook them down (be careful not to scorch them!) and then run them through a food mill. (If you don't have a food mill, you can cook them down -- add water! -- and watch them carefully so they don't burn. They should be OK as long as they are peeled and cored well, and are a soft apple.) Some apples are sweet enough that they don't need sugar! I have a batch like that now, and they are soo good!!! If not, just add sugar and cinnamon to your liking. If the apples are boiling hot, they can go straight into jars without having to water bath them. They should seal on their own. :) Or if you don't want to can them, just freeze them! You will never buy grocery store applesauce again! :)

Can anyone gice me a applesauce recipe?Love that stuff!!!!!!!
Pollyanna Diehl Comment by Pollyanna Diehl on November 24, 2009 at 1:07pm
Hi LaRai! Thanks for joining! Spaghetti sauce is great to can, because if you take it right off of the stove boiling hot, it doesn't need to be processed in the hot water bath...it seals itself! :)

Pressure cookers nowadays aren't made like they used to be. They are much safer. I would recommend a new one if you are looking into doing that, and not picking up an old one at a flea market or yard sale.

I am actually named after "Pollyanna Pickering" an English wildlife artist. When my Mum was pregnant with me, she had one of her calendars, and fell in love with her name. She is so very talented! I had the pleasure of meeting her when I was 10; very exciting! Your name is very interesting too...where does it come from?
